The Ocean Within

The modern baseline is an illusion.

We assume the passage of time stole our sharpness.

We rationalise the friction of the day as a natural consequence of getting older.

We operate under decades of compounding expectations, dragging ourselves through schedules that demand infinitely more than the generations before us.

Marine biologist Daniel Pauly identified this phenomenon in the mid-90s as Shifting Baseline Syndrome. Initially it described scientists who, from the shore, studied a depleted ocean. They accept the sparser waters as the natural starting point, rather than the teeming abundance of the past that, for centuries, was the norm. They rationalise the scantily populated seas of the present.

We enact this line of thinking ourselves. Modern expectations measure our capacity against the depleted ocean within us. It’s been so long since we held a stable baseline of performance that we scramble to find justifications for our feeling off-kilter.

The world sped up while our output and responsibilities multiplied.

Sprinting to Stand Still

As the pace accelerates, we find ourselves stretching further and working harder to afford the same things and stand in the same spot. This is the Red Queen Hypothesis, as outlined by biologist Leigh Van Valen, which states that a species must constantly adapt and evolve simply to survive against competing organisms doing the same thing.

Today's landscape operates on this same frequency. The stairmaster of life increases in difficulty unprompted; we need more strength and effort to cover the same distance.

Rather than give ourselves the grace of understanding the shift, instead we normalise a heavier burden.

We push our biology to maintain the pace and, of course, the strain accumulates. Our nervous system attempts to meet the demand without a chance for recovery.

Before long, what once felt like a sprint becomes our new baseline, our new normal. We assume we can stretch ourselves indefinitely to handle the burgeoning load. But there’s a ceiling to what any organism can hold.

Breaking the Infrastructure

Ecologists use a precise metric to measure survival. They call it carrying capacity. This defines the maximum burden an environment can support before it begins to fray. Push past that threshold and the soil degrades, the rivers narrow and the system buckles under the demand.

We treat our internal biology with this same negligence. We act as if our physiological reserves are infinite and expect to recover in spite of mounting expectations.

The more we want from life, the more the passing storm of stress becomes the climate. Effort alone fails to address our frustrations with energy and attention. The load is the problem.
